Dr. Aaron Avivi, professor of Research at the University of Haifa and Head of the Laboratory of Subterranean Mammals Biology at the Institute of Evolution at the University of Haifa, has made a startling discovery in his years of cancer research. He has found that the blind mole-rat does not get cancer, and they live for a range of 30 years compared to a regular rat that only lives for 4 years.
Moreover, the blind mole-rat shows extremely high cancer-resistance to chemical carcinogens that induced cancer in 100% of mice and rats. Most intriguing, cells taken only from the blind mole-rat but not from other species inhibit growth and kill cancer cells, but not normal cells, from various tissues and species, most importantly a wide range of human cancer cells.
Dr Avivi did his undergraduate work in Israel at Hebrew University and received his PhD from the Weizmann Institute for Science in Endocrinology. He has been a visiting professor at NYU, Toronto University School of Medicine and the Royal University in Copenhagen, Denmark.
